Tim Cook visits China for first time as Apple CEO
Tim Cook has visited China for the first time since becoming Apple CEO. Mr. Cook met with the country's Vice Premier, Li Kegiang. The two discussed economic development and intellectual property rights. Xinhua, the country's official press agency reported Vice Premier Li Keqiang said the country will "strengthen intellectual property rights protection" and "pay more attention to caring for workers."

Ah, love ? it makes the world go round, it has been said. And music, on the other hand, ?hath charms to soothe the savage breast.? So what happens when you put these two powerful forces together? We have something the world loves to see ? a musical power couple.
Here are some of the most notable power couples of music, in no particular order:
1. Yoko Ono and John Lennon. This is so classic, it hardly needs explaining. John Lennon is a music icon who will remain the stuff of legends for as long as rock ?n? roll exists in this world. Yoko Ono is an artist and musician in her own right; she was also the woman that John Lennon so publicly adored and gave his heart to.
Ono was Lennon?s soul mate, his faithful companion in his last years, his biggest fan.
She was by Lennon?s side that fateful day he was assassinated. She has since kept the fires of Lennon?s crusades burning. If ever there was a musical power couple that we will hear about forever, it is this one.2. Sonny and Cher. Here is another classic team-up, though sadly, it didn?t last. Sonny Bono and Cherilyn LaPiere met in 1962, when Sonny was working at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood. They were married in 1964 and put out two songs in the same year, but their stardom did not come until 1965, when their single ?I Got You Baby? catapulted to number 1. This was followed by several more hits, and Sonny and Cher became a household name.
Unfortunately, their married life wasn?t as successful as their professional one.
In 1974, after several years of domestic turbulence, they divorced on less-than-amicable terms. In 1998, Sonny died in a ski accident. But Cher lives on and still shines in her own terms, albeit less brightly than before. Perhaps, it is because the world really cannot imagine Cher without Sonny. For us, it will always be ?Sonny and Cher.?3. Jennifer Lopez and Mark Anthony. If you?ve ever seen J-Lo and Mark Anthony perform a song together, you won?t find it hard to imagine the kind of chemistry the two of them could have. This couple sizzles on stage. They seem to light each other?s fire. If only marriage could look like this in the four walls of the domestic abode, probably nobody would ever get divorce.
But the stage is not the home, and performance is not the same as everyday reality. In 2011, after a seven-year marriage, the couple announced their separation. This, however, does not mean they do not perform together on stage anymore, so even if they are no longer a couple in real life, they still remain an amazing power couple in the music industry.
4. Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber. If there?s anything more interesting to watch than love, it is young love. Justin Bieber, born in 1994, released his first full-length album My World 2.0 in 2010. By 2011, he was already the recipient of the several awards, including Artist of the Year from the American Music Awards and Top New Artist from the Billboard Music Awards.
It was also in 2011 that his romantic relationship with Selena Gomez was revealed. Gomez, who has been in show business since she was seven, has starred in several films, won several music awards of her own, and was designated UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2008.
Of course, the two are not married; still, they are arguably the most watched music power couple of 2012.
5. Beyonc? and Jay-Z. They have worked together on several songs, such as ??03 Bonnie & Clyde? in 2002, ?Crazy in Love? in 2003, and ?D?j? Vu? in 2006; most of these became huge hits. They have each won several music awards. In 2006, Time magazine listed them as the Most Powerful Couple in their 100 Most Influential People list. In 2008, they were married. And in 2012, Beyonc? gave birth to their first child, Blue Ivy.
They are, undoubtedly, the music industry?s most powerful couples today. We can only hope they continue making good music together and manufacturing CDs for a long, long time.

These have been a rough couple of years for business travelers as their companies have suffered through the recession and cut back on perks ? and in some cases, cut back on any travel at all. As FareCompare has been reporting, there are several ways for road warriors to travel on a budget ? but budgets only stretch so far.

- About 19 percent say they still cut back on meals and other expenses, but not travel itself

How Much More Women Pay for Health Insurance
Some states permit insurance companies to offer maternity and women?s health as a separate policy rider. This is the case in NC, where the cheapest publicly available insurance for a young woman adding maternity coverage comes close to doubling the total premium. I am surprised they did not take this into account on their data, since it would lead to a lot more ?red states? ? of some strange shade of red or gray (I think that?s been covered well at this point).
Feels like one of those ?know your data? issues.
I am trying to leave the politics out of it, but for the ?men pay more in car insurance? folks out there, the last time I checked there is only one driver of a car. Maternity coverage implies the involvement of a guy at some point in time or another, but the health burden is entirely on the woman.

Rep. Michele Bachmann insisted this week that the reason 40 million Americans ?choose? not to buy health care insurance has nothing to do with the cost.
Speaking to Fox News host Sean Hannity after attending Supreme Court arguments on Wednesday, the former Republican presidential candidate said that the Obama administration was wrong to suggest that insurance could be regulated because everyone would eventually be in the health care market.
?One argument that the government was trying to make is that somehow health care is uniquely different,? Bachmann explained. ?That government can regulate it because everyone participates. Health insurance is not uniquely different.?
?It?s still an opportunity that some people choose to engage in, but 40 million people do not.?
She continued: ?And the premise was made that people don?t buy insurance because they can?t afford it. That?s not true. There are people who just decide they want to roll the dice and take their chances that they won?t need insurance.?
Georgetown?University?s?Center?for?Children?and?Families found in 2009 that 66 percent thought Congress? top priority should be making health care more affordable. In all, 44 percent of those polled said they had cut back on household spending in the previous two years as a result of health care costs.
The Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured determined (PDF) in 2007 that 80 percent of those without health insurance were working families.
In 2010, Bachmann became the first lawmaker to introduce legislation to repeal President Barack Obama?s health care reform law.
As justices were hearing oral arguments on Monday, the Minnesota Republican stood on the steps in front of the Supreme Court and told several tea party groups that ?this is the day that we have been waiting for!?
?We have not waved the white flag of surrender on socialized medicine!? she exclaimed. ?This is one of the most important, consequential decisions that will ever come before this court. ? We believe that the Constitution means something!?

Selena Gomez is one lucky lady! With the release of his new single, "Boyfriend," Justin Bieber is now sharing his own relationship advice, which seems to be working since he and Gomez have been dating for over a year.
"To be a great boyfriend, you just have to have patience," Bieber told E! News. "You're always wrong when it comes to girls, you're always wrong, so just say sorry when things are rough."
On Bieber's latest single, he makes all the girls' hearts melt when he sings, "If I was your boyfriend, never let you go/ Keep you on my arm, girl, you'd never be alone/ I can be a gentleman, anything you want," but many are wondering if he had Gomez in mind when writing the track.
"No, I mean the song definitely just comes from my heart and whatever that is, whatever is in there," Justin said. "So, I mean, I'll never let you go if you're my girlfriend, I promise."
It seems like Gomez might be sticking around for a while, then! In an interview with Radio Disney's "Celebrity Take With Jake," Bieber may have also revealed the secret as to why their relationship is still going so strong.
"You just have to be honest, that's the first thing, because if you're not honest, then the relationship is just not a good relationship," Bieber said. "At the end of the day, your girl would appreciate you being honest more than lying to her and vice versa."
It probably doesn't hurt the relationship when your boyfriend's idea of a date is to rent out the Staples Center for a private viewing of "Titanic."
So with Bieber gearing up to release Believe and Gomez hard at work shooting "Spring Breakers," will these two find time to possibly collaborate on a track?
"I mean, yeah," Bieber told Billy Bush Tuesday (March 27) on "Access Hollywood Live." "If it would happen before, it's going to happen now. There's no difference. If we do a song together, we do a song together. It is what it is. I think she's taking a little break from music for a while. She's just doing her acting."

Washington?s Metzger steps down as boys? basketball coach

Brad Metzger has resigned as head boys? basketball coach at Cedar Rapids Washington in order to spend more time with his family. Metzger led the Warriors to back-to-back state tournaments in 2009 and 2010, though they went winless this past season.
?We are grateful for Coach Metzger?s four years of hard work for the Warriors.? Dr. Ralph Plagman, Washington Principal, said in a statement. ?We will miss Brad Metzger on the bench but we look forward to his sons playing Warrior Basketball in the future.?

National study ranks city governments' use of social media
ScienceDaily (Mar. 22, 2012) ? More than six times as many big city governments reached citizens via Facebook in 2011 compared to 2009, while use of YouTube and Twitter grew fourfold and threefold respectively, a new study indicates.
Karen Mossberger, head of the University of Illinois at Chicago's public administration graduate program, and Yonghong Wu, associate professor, analyzed and ranked the online interactivity, transparency and accessibility of the country's 75 largest cities from March through May 2011. They used the data to compile the Civic Engagement Index, and compared it with their findings from a study they conducted in 2009.
The cities' rankings reflected opportunities for citizen participation and information, including: -- hosting of open data portals -- comments allowed on blogs and social networks -- the extent to which online discussions concerned policy as well as city services -- information on officials, budgets, city council meetings and neighborhood issues
New York and Seattle tied for first place, followed by Virginia Beach, Va.; Portland, Ore.; San Francisco; and Kansas City, Mo., the study reported.
Mossberger said the top-ranked city governments have made technology a priority, especially for transparency or civic engagement.
"Seattle has long been an innovator in this area, with programs to address the digital divide online and offline. New York has long used the web for transparency," she said.
Chicago tied with San Diego and Minneapolis at 17th. Toledo ranked last.

Twitter was used by 87 percent of the cities, compared with 25 percent in 2009. Facebook also was used by 87 percent of the cities, up from 13 percent. YouTube links appeared on the websites of 75 percent of the cities, up from 16 percent.
Nearly all city sites allowed comments on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube and presented policy content such as discussions of city budgets.
"In Chicago, for example, the Emanuel administration solicited budget ideas last summer on Twitter," Mossberger said. "Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer regularly holds a virtual 'Talk to Greg' on Facebook and Twitter. Seattle is experimenting with platforms like the IdeaScale, where users can submit and rate ideas."
Open data portals were found in only 12 cities: Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Honolulu, Louisville, Ky., Milwaukee, New York, Philadelphia, Portland, Ore., San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. The portals allow users access to city data on crime, budgets, Freedom of Information Act requests, city facilities, vacant land, building permits and other matters.
The researchers note that some information is not formatted for easy use by average citizens.
"For example, cities often post files that require special software, such as geographic information system software. And budget data can be difficult for citizens to understand," Mossberger said.
Mossberger predicts that new apps may make information on data portals more usable. Apps designed in competitions in Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C. have focused on civic engagement as well as city services.
"First-place winners in New York and Chicago addressed traffic and parking," Mossberger said. "But in Chicago, another winning app allowed residents to contribute ideas for a park. Other apps have been designed to track lobbyists in Chicago."
In another study confined to Illinois' 20 largest cities, the researchers found that 55 percent of the cities used Twitter, Facebook and YouTube in 2011, compared to 15 percent for Twitter, 10 percent for Facebook, and 10 percent for YouTube in 2009.
"Ultimately, the impact of these tools depends on factors other than technology -- the quality of the information, local government practices and citizen response," Mossberger said.

HBT: Carpenter leaves Cards' camp after setback
Whatever progress Chris Carpenter had made in his recovery from a neck injury has been wiped away, as Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post Dispatch reports that the veteran right-hander has left Cardinals camp ?to be further examined by nerve specialists after experiencing renewed symptoms associated with a bulging cervical disc.?
In other words: Not good.
According to Strauss he experienced ?weakness? in his neck and shoulder after throwing batting practice Sunday, canceling today?s scheduled session and instead returning to St. Louis.
Carpenter?s odds of being ready for Opening Day now seem very slim, which means Lance Lynn figures to begin the season in the Cardinals? rotation. However, general manager John Mozeliak told Strauss that surgery is not being considered at this point and Carpenter has not officially been ruled out for the opener yet.
And now Cardinals fans can hold their breath waiting for the latest test results to come back.

Stocks retreat from 4-year high on China fears

Stocks retreated from a near 4-year high on Tuesday on signs that indicated China's economy may be slowing.
Weighing on both the equities and commodities markets, China raised fuel prices for the second time in less than six weeks, while BHP Billiton Ltd, the world's largest mining company, said it saw signs of "flattening" iron-ore demand from the world's second-biggest economy.
But even with the S&P 500 up 12 percent for the year, market participants viewed the day's drop as a chance to take a breather before moving higher.
"Do I think we are due for a pullback? Yes. Do I think this is the start of a pullback? No," said Mike Shea, managing partner and trader at Direct Access Partners in New York.
"The news out of China caused everyone to look up and take a breath, but the sentiment hasn't changed. It's still bullish."
Before Tuesday, the S&P 500 index was at its highest point since May 2008 and about 10 percent below the record closing high of 1,565.15 set in October 2007.
The market has been showing resilience, shrugging off sluggish starts and building upward momentum later in the session to close higher.
Easing concerns about the euro zone's debt crisis and improving U.S. economic data have lifted the S&P 500 more than 11 percent for the year and over 27 percent from an October low.
Permits for U.S. homebuilding neared a 3-1/2 year high in February, even as groundbreaking activity slipped, the government said Tuesday, suggesting a nascent recovery in the sector was still on track.
Shares of Tiffany and Co jumped after the jewelry chain forecast higher sales this year, helped by expansion in Asia and the Americas.
Adobe Systems Inc was the worst percentage decliner in the Nasdaq 100. The maker of Photoshop and Acrobat software late Monday reported that quarterly revenue growth slowed, missing forecasts.
Apple shares dipped after an influential U.S. consumer watchdog said it is investigating online reports that Apple Inc's new iPad throws off an unusually large amount of heat.
Lions Gate Entertainment Corp shares hit an all-time high of $14.78 before the release of its highly anticipated movie, "The Hunger Games."

500,000 people pack Dublin for St. Patrick's Day
DUBLIN (AP) ? An estimated 500,000 people crowded Saturday into central Dublin to view the St. Patrick's Day parade, a focal point for Irish celebrations worldwide and the start of the tourist season in debt-battered Ireland.
Bands from Britain, the United States and Russia joined thousands of Irish volunteers on Saturday's two-hour procession down Dublin's major boulevard, O'Connell Street, across the River Liffey, past Trinity College and concluding outside St. Patrick's Cathedral.
In his St. Patrick's Day message, Catholic Cardinal Sean Brady offered prayers to the estimated 50,000 citizens who have emigrated in the past year to escape Ireland's weak economy.
Unemployment stands at 14.4 percent despite the resumption of emigration at levels last seen in the 1980s. Ireland has been forced to raise taxes and slash spending for four straight years and since 2011 has been dependent on foreign loans to pay its government bills.
Seventeen government ministers have left Ireland this week to lobby 15 countries for increased investment and tourism. Prime Minister Enda Kenny is grand marshal of Saturday's parade in Chicago.
"I am keenly aware of the huge numbers who have emigrated from Ireland in recent times, especially those who felt they had no choice," said Brady, spiritual leader of 4 million Catholics in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
"May the memory of St. Patrick, who was himself carried off from his homeland at the age of 16, sustain all those who have left our shores for other lands," Brady said, referring to the saint's legendary background as a slave imported from Britain. "May the example of Patrick's faith in God, who comforted and protected him, protect and comfort them also."
The Catholic Church in Ireland also launched an online information pack for emigrants.
Brady was presiding Saturday over a special service honoring both St. Patrick and the Vatican's new diplomat to Ireland, New York-born Archbishop Charles Brown. At a service in Armagh, Ireland's ecclesiastical capital located in Northern Ireland, the two men planned to bless sprigs of shamrock for the congregation and then take part in Armagh's own parade.
Saturday's Dublin parade is just one of more than 50 across Ireland, many of them rowdy village affairs. The capital is also running a four-day St. Patrick's Festival through Monday that features live performances and amusement park rides in several parts of the city center, although the fireworks show has been canceled, another casualty of austerity.
The city's two most popular tourist attractions, the Guinness brewery and Dublin Zoo, both offered nods to the day's mix of patriotism and partying. Zoo animals were being fed special mixes of oranges and vegetables, mimicking the green and orange of the Irish flag, while Guinness was offering free admission to any visitors named Patrick.

California Gov. Jerry Brown wants voters to back his ballot initiative to raise taxes. But this week he changed it to fend off a teacher's union that could have ruined his plans.?

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) is willing to ratchet up taxes on the rich in order to ensure that his top political priority ? a ballot initiative to help pare back California?s $9.2 billion deficit ? has a better chance of passing this fall.

The California Federation of Teachers (CFT) was planning to put its own tax measures on the ballot to compete with Governor Brown?s, and voters typically vote ?no? when confused by multiple initiatives on the same topic. So in a deal with the union this week, Brown agreed to amend his plan, making it tougher on California?s wealthiest residents.
Brown?s willingness to change his plan is evidence of how deeply the initiative process has reshaped the political landscape in California. With the Republican minority refusing to play ball in the Legislature, the ballot was Brown?s last resort for his tax plan ? and with the teacher?s union threatening to play spoiler, Brown had little choice but to compromise, experts say.
?The initiative system shifts a lot of power from elected officials to those who can mount initiative campaigns,? says Jack Pitney, a political scientist at?Claremont McKenna College, via e-mail. ?Brown didn't have much leverage over the union.?The union had a great deal of leverage over Brown.?
Brown unveiled his original initiative in December, asking voters to approve a half-cent increase in the sales tax and income-tax hikes for the rich ? 1 percentage point for earners over $250,000 and 2 points for single earners over $500,000. He told voters that the initiative was crucial to help solve California?s chronic fiscal crises.
To fend off the CFT, however, Brown now says that he is lowering the sales tax hike to a quarter cent and increasing his tax hike on the wealthy ? to 2 percentage points on single earners over $300,000 and 3 points for those over $500,000. The tax increases on the rich would also last for seven years, not five, as was the case in the original plan.
?This united effort makes victory more likely and will go a long way toward balancing our budget and protecting our schools, universities, and public safety,? Brown said in a statement.
Democrats across the country could try to copy the idea.
?Brown?s agreement with the CFT constitutes an approach that is seductive for many Democratic politicians,? says Steven Schier, a political scientist at?Carleton?College?in Northfield, Minn. ?By raising taxes on the highest incomes, the state gets additional ? but highly unstable ? source of revenue without stressing the middle and working classes.?
But he questions whether Brown?s initiative will be enough. ?California?s budget problems are so severe that it?s just a matter of time before state government must again, with higher taxes, tap its largest, most stable revenue source: middle-class citizens.?
Others agree that taxing the rich might not yield what Brown wants.?
?Especially at the high income level, people who work in?California?can establish residency in a low-tax state,??says?Peter Zeleski, a professor at the Villanova School of Business in Philadelphia, in an e-mail.??If?higher tax rates on high-income earners?was the solution to a budget deficit, then between?Hollywood?and Silicon Valley,?California would not be in the red.?
Getting CFT?s measure of the ballot will help clear the field for Brown?s initiative, experts agree. But Brown risks kindling a rich-voter revolt.
?Governor Brown's deal makes it much more likely there will only be one or two tax proposals on the fall ballot, says Michael Shires, professor of public policy at?Pepperdine?University, via e-mail. ?But ?the expansion of the upper brackets in his proposal may well motivate those affected to fight it even harder.? ?
Republicans criticized the ?closed-door deal.?
?Public opinion polls have already shown that the more voters know about the Governor?s tax hikes, the less they like them,? said Assembly Republican Leader Connie Conway in a statement. ?I believe voters will see through this new sham of a proposal.?

FYI: I also provided my email address on the survey, so I didn?t say all this stuff to them anonymously.

?YOU HAVE TO BOOK THIS CONFERENCE IN A SPACE THAT PROVIDES *FREE* WIRELESS INTERNET IN BOTH THE HOTEL ROOMS AND IN THE CONFERENCE PANEL ROOMS, BOOK FAIR, ETC. Seriously. You just have to. (I organized my panel thinking that the audience would have access to the web. They did not. And this sort of blows my mind a little.)
?Cancelling the Pedagogy Forum had the unfortunate result of putting some apprentice teachers who don?t have much to say yet in huge, largely empty ballrooms. Apprentice teachers need to meet and learn from other apprentice teachers. How can we better assist MFA students who are trying to professionalize themselves as teachers?
?The best panels I went to were comprised of people who?d prepared something to say, but kept it short enough so that a conversation could follow. I understand why AWP directs panelists NOT to prepare and read long papers, but I?d rather have that than off-the-cuff banter. I come to learn, not be entertained. I?m pleased to say that all the panels I went to were well-organized, and all but one was thoroughly engaging.
?Once upon a time, the acronym AWP stood for ASSOCIATION OF WRITING PROGRAMS, but at some point (I can?t find the year this happened), this was changed to include ASSOCIATION OF?WRITERS AND WRITING PROGRAMS. This signaled an important (and positive) shift in the AWP?s focus and overall reach. While I?m REALLY happy that the independent publishing scene has a strong presence at the Book Fair, and I?m REALLY happy we offer top-notch, marquee-quality readings to the public, I often feel that the old ?W? and ?P? in AWP (WRITING PROGRAMS) gets short shrift in all the hoopla. Let me explain.
?AWP is the governing body of, the professional meeting of WRITERS IN ACADEMIA. I come to AWP in large part to recharge my batteries and engage with others in my profession.?I go to other kinds of conferences and events to engage with writers in general. At AWP, I find that the panels devoted to pedagogy, program administrations, and other professionalization issues of importance to me are sparsely attended. This is not your fault, but by opening the door to WRITERS in general, which is a good thing, we also remove a lot of focus from the fact that WE ARE AN ACADEMIC DISCIPLINE.
?Seemingly, we want one foot in academia and one foot out, and there are benefits to this stance, but also some negative consequences, too.? To ameliorate those consequences, I suggest choosing two keynote speakers?a headliner, one who isn?t in academia (like Margaret Atwood) who can speak to the W=Writers crowd, and an opening act, one who IS in academia, who is publishing well AND teaches well AND who is or has run a program (like Charles Baxter, Michael Byers, Richard Bausch, Porter Shreve, Jesse Lee Kercheval, Lan Samantha Change, Sven Birkerts, Robin Hemley, A. Manette Ansay) who could speak to the WP=Writing Program crowd. You might say that the winner of the George Garrett Prize is this person, but that award is for ?Community Service,? not for being a professional academic writer-teacher with things to say about that profession. If you?re worried that an address to the WP crowd will ?alienate? the W crowd, I say, too bad. I truly believe that our discipline cannot gain better traction within academia unless we try harder to ?discipline-ize? ourselves. The risk, yes, is that we become that which we hate, but we have chosen to ensconce ourselves in academia, and academia seems to be waiting for us to decide: Are we in, or are we out? How we orchestrate our conference demonstrates that commitment (or lack thereof).
