Head to head: NVIDIA's Tegra 4 and Tegra 4i

NVIDIA Tegra 4

Chipmaker shows its 2013 wares at Mobile World Congress

For NVIDIA in 2013 (so far at least), the conversation revolves around Tegra 4 and Tegra 4i. The gist is that Tegra 4 is more powerful of the two, with more GPU cores than Tegra 4i (72 versus 60) and boasting the ARM 15 processor as part of NVIDIA's 4+1 quad-core package. It's a little bigger and more expensive than Tegra 4i, which dispenses with a dozen GPU cores and integrates the i500 LTE modem onto the die. Tegra 4i also uses an ARM9-r4, which while not quite as bad-ass as the ARM15 can very much still hold its own thanks to the optimization from ARM and NVIDIA.

Android Central at Mobile World Congress

We got an up-close look at the new systems today, on the eve of Mobile World Congress, in a series of relatively controlled scenarios on test hardare, including NVIDIA's own "Phoenix" reference phone. And it's tough not to let NVIDIA's enthusiasm for its new line rub off on you. On paper, anyway, and comparing to the best of what's currently available -- which means Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 and its own Tegra 3 -- the next generation of Tegra devices looks damned promising.

'Twilight' actor gets probation for public pee

By Natalie Finn, E!Online

Bronson Pelletier has learned, it doesn't pay to pee in public. ?The "Twilight" actor pleaded no contest last month to misdemeanor public intoxication and was sentenced to two years' summary probation and ordered to pay restitution and court fees.?

Getty Images file

Bronson Pelletier played Jared, a member of Jacob Black's wolf pack, in the "Twilight" movie series.

He was also slapped with a day in jail but was credited for time served.?

Leave Stephen Dorff alone when he's trying to take a whiz

Pelletier made quite the, er, splash with his Dec. 17 arrest for drunkenly urinating on the floor of a needless-to-say indoor terminal at Los Angeles International Airport.

The incident was, of course, captured on video by a quick-thinking cell phone user.

The 26-year-old actor entered his plea on Jan. 25, according to L.A. Superior Court records.

Boingo expands its Wi-Fi services into airports in Japan & Germany

If you?ve flown in the last several months and tried looking for Wi-Fi hotspots in any of the handful of airports through the country, you might be surprised to see one name that?s constantly popping up ? Boingo Wireless. Always expanding their reach, Boingo has shown us that they?re not afraid to go outside of the box to expand their premium Wi-Fi services. Interestingly enough, some of the subways in New York City are offering Boingo?s services!

This time around, though, they?re moving aggressively by targeting the international market. Considering they?re a staple in many airports across the US, it?s only natural for them to make the move into other international airports. Specifically, they?ve recently secured agreements to manage and operate Wi-Fi services in a number of airports situated in Japan and Germany. As it stands, the listing currently consists of the following locations:

Japan airports:

  • Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport) (HND)
  • Narita International Airport, Tokyo (NRT)
  • New Chitose Airport, Sapporo (CTS)
  • Fukuoka Airport (FUK)
  • Chubu Airport, Nagoya (NGO)

Germany airports:
  • Berlin-Tegel (TXL)
  • Nuremberg (NUE)
  • Stuttgart (STR)

Therefore, the next time you find yourself traveling to any of those locations, you can be assured to have plenty of reliable Wi-Fi service ? even more when international cellular data can be pocket busting on its own. Although the service isn?t available at the moment in the aforementioned locations, it?s gearing up to launch sometime during spring 2013.

Autopsy confirms Mindy McCready's death as suicide

HEBER SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) ? Authorities in Arkansas say preliminary autopsy results confirm country music singer Mindy McCready's death was a suicide.

The Cleburne County sheriff said in a statement Wednesday that preliminary autopsy results from Arkansas' state crime lab show McCready's death was a suicide from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators have said McCready apparently shot and killed her late boyfriend's dog before she turned the gun on herself Sunday at her home in Heber Springs, Ark. Authorities found McCready's body and the dog on the front porch where her longtime boyfriend, musician David Wilson, died last month of a gunshot wound to the head.

Authorities are investigating Wilson's death as a suicide but they haven't determined an official cause of death yet.

Champions League: PSG coach Ancelotti mystified by Ibrahimovic red card

VALENCIA - Paris St Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti said he was surprised at the decision to send off Zlatan Ibrahimovic late in Tuesday's (Wednesday, PHL time) 2-1 Champions League last 16, first leg victory at Valencia.

[Related: PSG win 2-1 at Valencia as Ibrahimovic sees red]

The Sweden striker got a straight red card after lunging at fullback Andres Guardado with his studs up but Ancelotti said he felt it was harsh on the volatile Ibrahimovic who suffered his third sending off in Europe's elite club competition.

"I did not understand it," Ancelotti told a news conference.

"He was out on the wing, he made a tackle and he did not deserve to be sent off," the Italian added. "That's football."

Ancelotti said he was satisfied with the result despite Valencia's 90th-minute goal giving the La Liga club a sliver of hope for the return leg in Paris in three weeks' time, when the talismanic Ibrahimovic will be suspended.

He dismissed suggestions his players had eased off towards the end of the game.

"I don't think we relaxed and we could even have scored a third on a couple of occasions. The team played a good match, we controlled the ball well and I'm pleased with our performance.

"Valencia showed their quality, we defended and worked well. We won the ball back well and made some swift counter attacks."

PSG defender Mamadou Sakho said the Ligue 1 leaders were upset at conceding late on after establishing a 2-0 halftime lead and squandering several chances to score a third goal in the second period at the Mestalla.

"We're disappointed to concede a goal, especially at the end of the game," he said on UEFA's website. "But overall, it's a good result. To come here and win is very good after all." - Reuters

Long Islanders beg for snow plows days after storm

By Greg Cergol and Pei-Sze Cheng, NBCNewYork.com

Frustrated residents on New York's Long Island, stranded in their homes by Friday's blizzard, spent Monday calling local town officials and begging for plows to dig them out.

In Centereach, neighbors took matters into their own hands, pushing vehicles out of the streets and using shovels and snowblowers to clear the streets on their own.

"For the last three days, we've been pushing people out and digging people out," said Steve Reinhardt.

Walter Doroski, who's been helping push cars through the icy, snowy mess on Wood Drive, said, "It's been horrible. This is the worst it's ever been, we haven't seen a plow truck at all."

On Dean Street in Port Jefferson Station, a man slipped on the icy road while trying to help push a friend's car. That man needed an ambulance but help could not make it up the road.

"The ambulance couldn't pass, so they had to come on a sled and just put him on there and drag him away," said witness Elinson Taveres.

Clay Darrohn, a father of two in Nesconset, was stuck in his home for three days and his calls to Smithtown officials went unanswered.

His wife needed to make a business trip to Chicago and was eventually forced to trudge through knee-deep snow to a friend's waiting car at the end of her street.

Others living on Commander Vic Lane also tried and failed to bring help.

"I am so mad, I can't tell you. It's crazy," said neighbor Ira Jacobs.

Jacobs and his neighbors cleared part of the street using snowblowers. Shortly after NBC 4 New York called, Smithtown plows were finally seen in the streets.

The arrival of the first plow was greeted by jeers from Jacobs.

"Where have you been for three days?" he asked.

Still buried
Similar questions were being asked in Suffolk communities like Setauket and Ronkonkoma, still buried under nearly 3 feet of snow.

A dangerous winter storm churned Friday into the Northeast as forecasters warned of a whiteout.

Watching and waiting for a way off the snow-covered street was Fran Gucciardo, a woman in her 80s who relies on oxygen because of a rare pulmonary disease. Gucciardo has been unable to get to her doctor or physical therapy since the storm.

"These people are saving my life," Gucciardo said of her neighbors.

"I understand this was an unusual storm, but there was plenty of time to prepare for it," Gucciardo added.

Shortly after NBC 4 New York spoke to Brookhaven officials about Starfire Lane, plows finally arrived on that street as well.

"I won't sleep until every street is cleared," said Brookhaven deputy supervisor Dan Panico.

According to Panico, the storm overwhelmed town plowing operations across Suffolk.

The depth of the snow was too much for regular plows, Panico explained, so work was delayed until heavy equipment could be brought in from other areas.

"I understand the frustration," Panico said. "I am frustrated, too"

Panico is overseeing clean-up operations in Brookhaven because town supervisor Ed Romaine is away on vacation and the town's acting highway superintendent is sick, a town spokesman confirmed.

Their absence had no impact on the storm cleanup, and Romaine's office said his trip was planned far in advance of the storm.

But Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld questioned, "If you knew it was headed toward your township, would you make the decision to change your plans and stay and marshal forces to help residents, or would you go on vacation?"

7 Worst Battery Life-Guzzling Gadgets

There is a disturbing trend in the gadget world, and it's that laptop, tablet and phone makers aren't taking battery life seriously enough. Yes, having touch on a Windows 8 notebook is great, but not if the computer lasts an hour and a half less than one without that capability. And what good is a smartphone with an HD display and superfast processor if you have to plug it in around lunchtime? We run our homemade battery test, which involves continuous Web surfing at 40 percent brightness, on every device we review. And if the endurance isn't good enough, regardless of the gadget's other features, we simply won't recommend it. More »

YouTube Files Appeal Against Regulator In Russia Over Content Blocked By New Firewall

YouTube russia screen shotGoogle this week fired off one of the first high profile tests of Russia's controversial new firewall -- erected November 1, 2012 to block child porn, drugs and suicide content; but seen by critics as a route for the government to block whatever else it chooses. Google's YouTube operation in Russia has filed an appeal against the Russian regulator for blocking YouTube content. The appeal, filed on February 11 by YouTube LLC, concerns the?blacklisting of a video that showed how to apply Halloween makeup: because it shows how to make a wound, Roscomnadzor (Russia's consumer watchdog) also deemed that it encouraged suicide and suicidal tendencies. Parents' praise predicts attitudes toward challenge 5 years later

Parents' praise predicts attitudes toward challenge 5 years later [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 12-Feb-2013

Toddlers whose parents praised their efforts more than they praised them as individuals had a more positive approach to challenges five years later. That's the finding of a new longitudinal study that also found gender differences in the kind of praise that parents offer their children.

The study, by researchers at the University of Chicago and Stanford University, appears in the journal Child Development.

"Previous studies have looked at this issue among older students," according to Elizabeth A. Gunderson, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Temple University; Gunderson was at the University of Chicago when she led the study. "This study suggests that improving the quality of parents' praise in the toddler years may help children develop the belief that people can change and that challenging tasks provide opportunities to learn."

Parents praise their children in a variety of ways. They might say, "You worked really hard" after completing a challenging task or "You're a very smart girl." Or they might offer general comments such as "Great" or "You got it." While all of these phrases sound positive, prior research has shown that they have different effects. Process praise, when parents praise the effort children make, leads children to be more persistent and perform better on challenging tasks, while person praise (praising the individual) leads children to be less persistent and perform worse on such tasks. This is because process praise sends the message that effort and actions are the sources of success, leading children to believe they can improve their performance through hard work. Person praise sends the opposite messagethat the child's ability is fixed.

Researchers in this study videotaped more than fifty 1- to 3-year-olds and their parents during everyday interactions at home (the families represented a variety of races, ethnicities, and income levels). Each family was taped three times, when children were 1, 2, and 3. From the tapes, researchers identified instances in which parents praised their children and classified that praise as process praise (emphasizing effort, strategies, or actions, such as "You're doing a good job"), person praise (implying that children have fixed, positive qualities, such as "You're so smart"), or all other types of praise.

The researchers followed up with the children five years later when they were 7- to 8-year-olds, and gauged whether the children preferred challenging versus easy tasks, could figure out how to overcome setbacks, and believed that intelligence and personality traits can be developed (as opposed to being fixed).

When parents used more process praise while interacting with their children at home, children reported more positive approaches to challenges five years later, could think of more strategies to overcome setbacks, and believed that their traits could improve with effort. The other two types of praise (person praise and other praise) were not related to children's responses, the study found, nor was the total amount of praise.

Moreover, although boys and girls received the same amount of praise overall, boys got significantly more process praise than girls. And five years later, boys were more likely to have positive attitudes about academic challenges than girls and to believe that intelligence could be improved, according to the study.

"These results are cause for concern because they suggest that parents may be inadvertently creating the mindset among girls that traits are fixed, leading to decreased motivation and persistence in the face of challenges and setbacks," according to Gunderson.

People think I'm weird because I drink milk even when it's not breakfast..But I'm from Texas, and most of us are tea drinkers, so I also drink sweet tea every day. It's a necessity in my household ;D

S.Africa's DRDGold earnings up 25 pct, to pay dividend

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's DRDGold, reported a 25 percent increase in second-quarter profit on Tuesday, lifted by higher prices and production and declared its first interim dividend.

South Africa's fourth-largest gold producer said diluted headline earnings totalled 25 cents per share in the three months to end-December, from 20 cents in the preceding quarter.

Headline EPS, the main measure of profit in South Africa, excludes certain one-time items.

The company said it was helped by a 9 percent increase in gold production and a 7 percent increase in the average rand gold price received during the quarter.

DRDGold's production, which came in at 39,031 ounces in the second quarter, comes from surface operations and the extraction of gold contained in mine dumps surrounding Johannesburg.

Chief Executive Niel Pretorius, who describes his company as a gold plant more than a gold mine, is targeting production of between 140,000 and 150,000 ounces a year.

The company has decided to sell four of five exploration assets in Zimbabwe saying the underground mining potential at prospects did not sit with its strategy of keeping operations above ground.

But it said prospects for gold tailings reclamation in the country are still being evaluated.

DRDGold said it would pay an interim dividend of 14 cents per share, its first time to pay an interim dividend.

Shares of DRDGold have gained more than 13 percent in this year to date, compared to a 3.3 percent decline in the JSE's Gold Index.

Army chief General Bikram Singh leaves for Japan to bolster military ties

NEW DELHI: With India and Japan further cranking up their military ties across the entire spectrum, Army chief General Bikram Singh left for Tokyo on a four-day visit on Monday evening. There is a definite upswing in the strategic-military partnership with Japan.

General Singh's visit is part of the ongoing high-level exchanges between the two countries and highlights the importance of India's ties with Japan. A bilateral defence policy dialogue has been established. Army-to-army staff talks have also been institionalised,'' said an official.

General Singh will be meeting with the Japanese defence minister, the chief of general staff and the Army chief to discuss how to further strengthen bilateral ties. He will also visit some defence establishments,'' he added. The visit comes soon after India and Japan, both wary of the increasingly assertive behaviour of China and the rapid modernisation of the People's Liberation Army, held their first-ever maritime dialogue on January 29.

Ranging from joint combat exercises and coordinated anti-piracy patrols to counter-terrorism and service-to-service exchanges, India and Japan are implementing a new action plan to advance security cooperation''. The nine-point action plan, which dwells upon strategic and defence cooperation as well as coordination in tackling terrorism, piracy and proliferation, is meant to reinforce the strategic focus in the global partnership'' between India and Japan, say officials. India and Japan have similar views on several global and regional issues like extremism, terrorism and WMD-proliferation.

The two are also keen to ensure the safety of sea lanes in the Indian Ocean Region and Asia-Pacific because both depend largely on maritime traffic for their energy and trade needs,'' said an official. In addition to regular exercises between Indian and Japanese Coast Guards, our naval warships are also conducting coordinated anti-piracy patrolling in the Gulf of Aden. We also have regular Navy-to-Navy staff talks,'' he added.

Raytheon's Riot could make online stalking more efficient for governments (video)

Raytheon's Riot could make online stalking more efficient for governments (video)

When Raytheon isn't busy building a railgun or tinkering with exoskeletons, it apparently spends some time coding software to help keep tabs on what folks are doing online. The Guardian got ahold of a video from 2010 that reveals a Raytheon employee demoing such software with the moniker Rapid Information Overlay Technology, or Riot for short. Instead of sifting through streams of tweets and Foursquare checkins to figure out a person's haunts and schedule, Riot collates data for users and displays it in everything from maps (saved in .kml files) and charts. Riot is even savvy enough to pull out location information saved in the exif data of photos posted online. One visualization feature in the program arranges a target's info in a spider web-like view and highlights connections between them and people they've communicated with online.

According to The Guardian, Raytheon shared the Riot tech with the US government and "industry" organizations in 2010 through a research and development initiative that aimed to build a national security system that could analyze "trillions of entities" online. Raytheon says it hasn't sold the software to any clients, but we think this is a fine reminder that your friends, family and secret admirers may not be the only ones interested in your tweets and check-ins. Head past the jump to catch a video of Riot in action.
