In the month of October, members of the Van Buren Firefighters Association conducted several fundraising events in order to help raise money for the awareness and prevention of breast cancer.
After several ?boot? drives at local intersections and a popular car wash, the association collected $8,500 for the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Cancer Center in Ann Arbor.
A check was presented to Matthew Holland, representing the cancer center, on Dec. 14 at a small ceremony at Fire Station 2.
Firefighters Bruce VanGemert Jr., Lacey Marcotte and Michael Shores spearheaded the fundraising campaign by organizing the boot drives and the car wash. The success of the car wash was aided by the Belleville Road Walmart, which provided the soap, brushes, and other cleaning supplies.
?So many families we meet in the community use St. Joe?s ER or the primary care facilities. We rely on St. Joe?s too. So we wanted to support a cancer program that helps the same people we help as firefighters,? said VanGemert, who lost his grandmother to complications associated with breast cancer
He added that he was overwhelmed by the support firefighters received from the community and ?when we told drivers we were raising money for breast cancer (awareness) a lot of them threw in another dollar. Sometimes within two hours we had raised a thousand dollars and I think it?s pretty amazing that the community was able to do that.?
?Unfortunately our firefighters know all too well the effects breast cancer has had on their own families. Some family members have been lost to it, some have survived it, and our hope is that many more can avoid it by supporting research, awareness, and other services? said Fire Chief Dan Besson, whose mom, Yvette, fought breast cancer twice before passing away in 1994.
?As a fire chief I am just so proud of my firefighters ? they took time away from their families to help others ? with the hope that they can save other families the grief they?ve experienced from a breast cancer diagnosis,? Besson added. ?Also the community needs a special thank you for digging deep in their pockets so the firefighters could reach and exceed their goal.?

Reaction to threats by Senator Dianne Feinstein and others to ban certain weapons and serverely restrict ownership of guns generally has caused a run on gun stores, as is widely reported.
Less reported is the run on ammunition, leaving ammunition inventories down 93% since election day.
So reports Traction Control blog, Plunge! Ammunition Levels Less Than 10% of Pre-Election Levels:
Ammunition Stock levels have fallen by more than 90% from the pre-Election Day levels. Less than 10% remains available. Available Ammunition links will be updated throughout the day.
Handguns are down by 80%, Long Guns by 63% for an overall 72.2% reduction in firearms inventories.
AR pattern rifles are becoming particularly difficult to source.
In some locations, ammunition is hard to find:
Gun buyers in Houston have bought up the entire inventory of AR guns. It is not just the guns. The ammunition is sold out. The magazines are sold out, and not just the magazines that hold 30 or more rounds. Even finding a 10-round magazine is elusive. And ammunition? The smaller boxes of ammunition in the 223-556 calibers may be found, but not the larger boxes. Try calling Top Gun, Academy, Carter Country and other stores and you will get more or less the same answer: ?We are sold out entirely, we have no idea when we are getting new stock in, and we have no idea what the pricing will be.? Even the online sites that deal in guns and ammo are now low on inventory as sales have spiked.
Investors are noticing what it will mean for ammunition manufacturers in 2013:
Right now, ammo is severely constrained in all major retail stores and online. Local checks by the author at multiple Academy Sports and Outdoors, (which is owned by (KKR), Walmart (WMT), and Dicks Sporting Goods (DKS) have all meet with the same feedback ? gun sales, especially of AR-type weapons and pistols, are highly elevated, with some places being sold out of AR-type weapons. Ammo is scarce for popular rounds such as 9mm, .40 cal, .223, and 7.62?39.
Online stores such as cheaperthandirt.com are also sold out on many popular rounds. We had to go all the way to the 9th product page to find 9mm in a 50 round box for sale! ?
Clearly, ammo is in high demand right now, and from our point of view, it has never been harder to find.

-???????? NRA to Lobby Against Firearms Treaty: The United States? most powerful pro-gun group, the National Rifle Association (?NRA?) is vowing to contest a newly proposed international treaty aimed at regulating the $70B per year international firearms trade. While arms control has become a frontpage issue in the United States in the wake of the horrific shooting in Newtown, CT, it appears that the treaty would have little chance of success in the Senate, where pro-gun Senators have vowed to block the treaty.
-???????? World Watches as US Nears Fiscal Cliff: US taxpayers are in for a nasty surprise on January 1st unless the federal government can reach a deal to avoid a massive set of tax increases and defense spending cuts. As both sides start to divvy up blame, a deal appears increasingly less likely. US and world financial markets have become more jittery and dropped in recent days as the world braces for the impact a failed deal would have.
-???????? Germany Creates National Gun Registry: The German federal government now has a list of every legal gun owner in the country. Compiling information from many local and state registries, has painted a clearer picture of gun ownership within the country. There are roughly 5.5M legally registered guns in the country, along with roughly 1.4M gun owners ? approximately 4 guns per owner.? All EU countries are required to create such a registry by 2015.
-???????? Bermuda to Become Hub of Fixed Annuity Reinsurance?: At least one high-level fixed-income manager thinks so. However,? According to a report published in Bermuda?s Royal Gazette, Cliff Corso, CEO and chief investment officer of Cutwater Asset Management, predicts that the tiny island nation could play a big role in the fixed annuity reinsurance market. He noted:
?I think there?s a huge demand for reinsurance for fixed annuity life contracts?one of the greatest benefits, in terms of supply to Bermuda, is that, given the rate curve and where it sits today, and given the capital requirements of the insurers, there?s still a significant potential supply of reinsurance in fixed annuity life into Bermuda. There are already some players, but I think there will probably be more entrants coming to the Island to handle the potential demand for reinsurance. That?s our view, given the dynamics of the rate environment, and given the attractiveness of Bermuda as a place that is innovative and solution-oriented and that?s proven.
Bermuda has long been a center of offshore banking and insurance, but the country?s economy was hard hit by the worldwide economic crisis. Might Bermuda be poised to bounce back? Only time will tell, but a rejuvenated reinsurance market would certainly be a shot in the arm for both sectors.

A series of provocative paintings of Muslim clerics in scenes suggesting homosexuality has sparked a moral and legal crisis at Pakistan?s leading arts college after extremists threatened violence, declaring that the works insult Islam. Mujahid, who condemned the paintings, said that ?It?s part of Western and American plans to malign Islam.? (AP Photo/K.M. Chaudary)
LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) ? Pakistan's leading arts college has pushed boundaries before in this conservative nation. But when a series of paintings depicting Muslim clerics in scenes with strong homosexual overtones sparked an uproar and threats of violence by Islamic extremists, it was too much.
Officials at the National College of Arts in the eastern city of Lahore shut down its academic journal, which published the paintings, pulled all its issues out of bookstores and dissolved its editorial board. Still, a court is currently considering whether the paintings' artist, the journal's board and the school's head can be charged with blasphemy.
The college's decision to cave to Islamist pressure underscores how space for progressive thought is shrinking in Pakistan as hardline interpretations of Islam gain ground. It was also a marked change for an institution that has long been one of the leading defenders of liberal views in the country.
Pakistan is an overwhelmingly Muslim nation, and the majority of its citizens have long been fairly conservative. But what has grown more pronounced in recent years is the power of religious hardliners to enforce their views on members of the population who disagree, often with the threat of violence.
The government is caught up in a war against a domestic Taliban insurgency and often seems powerless to protect its citizens. At other times it has acquiesced to hardline demands because of fear, political gain or a convergence of beliefs.
"Now you have gun-toting people out there on the streets," said Saleema Hashmi, a former head of arts college. "You don't know who will kill you. You know no one is there to protect you."
The uproar was sparked when the college's Journal of Contemporary Art and Culture over the summer published pictures of a series of paintings by artist Muhammad Ali.
Particularly infuriating to conservatives were two works that they said insulted Islam by mixing images of Muslim clerics with suggestions of homosexuality, which is deeply taboo in Pakistan.
One titled "Call for Prayer" shows a cleric and a shirtless young boy sitting beside each other on a cot. The cleric fingers rosary beads as he gazes at the boy, who seductively stretches backward with his hands clasped behind his head.
Mumtaz Mangat, a lawyer who petitioned the courts to impose blasphemy charges, argued the image implied the cleric had "fun" with the boy before conducting the traditional Muslim call for prayer.
A second painting shows the same cleric reclining in front of a Muslim shrine, holding a book by Brazilian novelist Paulo Coelho in one hand as he lights a cigarette for a young boy with the other. A second young boy, who is naked with his legs strategically crossed to cover his genitals, sits at the cleric's feet. The painting has caused particular uproar because verses from Islam's holy book, the Quran, appear on the shrine.
Aasim Akhtar, an Islamabad-based art critic who wrote an essay accompanying the paintings in the journal, wrote that Ali's mixing of images was "deliberately, violently profane," aimed at challenge "homophobic" beliefs that are widespread in Pakistani society.
"Ali redefines the divine through a critique of authority and the hypocrisy of the cleric," wrote Akhtar, an Islamabad-based art critic who is also listed as a potential defendant in the blasphemy complaint.
Jamaat-ud-Dawa, widely believed to be a front for the Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group, issued a statement after the paintings were published demanding the college issue a public apology and withdraw all issues of the journal.
College staff members also began receiving anonymous text messages threatening violence, said a member of the journal's editorial board. They were afraid to push back for fear of being killed, he said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of being targeted.
Extremists gunned down two prominent Pakistani politicians last year for speaking out against the country's harsh blasphemy laws, which can mean life in prison or even death. Human rights activists have criticized the laws, saying they are often used to persecute religious minorities or settle personal scores.
Yahya Mujahid, the spokesman for Jamaat-ud-Dawa, denied the group sent any threats but said the state should punish those responsible.
"It's part of Western and American plans to malign Islam," claimed Mujahid.
A court considering whether to press blasphemy charges held its latest session in mid-December, but it has not said when it will rule whether such charges apply in the case.
Shahram Sarwar, a lawyer representing the college's editorial board, said his clients did not intend to hurt anyone's feelings but he was prepared to apologize on their behalf if they did.
Besides shutting down the journal, the college also closed the department where its staff worked, said Sarwar.
The current head of the National Arts College, Shabnam Khan, denied the institution caved to pressure from hardliners, saying the editorial staff quit voluntarily. She said the department was closed because no one was left to run it.
A member of the editorial board disputed this version of events, saying the college administration asked him and his colleagues to resign. He spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of being targeted by extremists.
The school has long been a progressive voice. A research project at the college in 2008 focused on the idea that rising Islamic conservatism and violent religious fanaticism was a fundamental threat to peace and democracy in Pakistan. In the 1980s, when former dictator Gen. Zia ul-Haq, a notorious Islamist, ordered all female students and teachers to cover their hair, the college pushed back.
Individual graduates have pushed the envelope with their work. Amra Khan's latest work, which was exhibited at the college and a gallery in Karachi this year, included Muslim veils embroidered with a pink Playboy bunny and The Rolling Stones' big red lips logo.
Evidence of the growing influence of Islamic hardliners abounds in Pakistan. In September, clerics wielding sticks forced their way into a wedding reception in the southern city of Ghotki to stop the guests from singing and dancing. A different set of clerics forced a five-star hotel to cancel a planned concert in August in the northwest town of Bhurban because they argued the music was counter to Islam.
Hardliners have had success influencing Pakistani institutions as well. The Supreme Court ordered the country's media regulatory body in August to look into blocking "vulgar" and "obscene" content on TV in response to a petition filed by conservative Islamists.
In November, the government's telecommunications arm banned late-night cell phone call packages, saying they encouraged immoral behavior by young people. The government banned YouTube earlier this year because of an anti-Islam video posted on the site, and one of the country's highest courts has blocked access to Facebook twice because of material considered anathema to Islam.
Khan, the head of the college, refused to discuss the case in more detail because of the court proceedings, but said that people across the political spectrum were becoming more alarmed by the use of violence to enforce views.
"I have heard recently even from conservative people that enough is enough," said Khan. "It is wrong that people interfere in others' lives, that people interfere in others' beliefs."

(Reuters) - A New York City woman who used her Facebook page to dupe donors into contributing to a "funeral fund" for one of the children killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre was charged with lying to the FBI, court documents showed.
Nouel Alba, 37, of the Bronx, used a Facebook page to pose as the aunt of one of the victims, 6-year-old Noah Pozner, and encouraged potential donors to contribute to a PayPal account in her name she had set up last February, according to court papers.
Alba, who made an initial appearance on Thursday before a U.S. magistrate in Connecticut, also claimed to have visited Sandy Hook school to identify the body of the boy, court records show, even though the school was an active crime scene closed off to parents.
When contacted by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents probing reports of fraudulent fundraising following the December 14 shooting, Alba claimed not to have posted any information related to Newtown on her Facebook account, or to have solicited donations or recently accessed her PayPal account.
Authorities also charge that she claimed falsely to have immediately refunded donations that she received.
She has been charged with a single count of lying to a federal agent, according to court papers. If convicted, Alba faces a maximum five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. She was released on a $50,000 bond.
Alba's next court appearance was set for January 16.
Her arrest on Thursday came roughly two weeks after police say 20-year-old Adam Lanza forced his way into the Sandy Hook school, killing 20 first graders and six staff members with a semi-automatic weapon.
Before the rampage, police say Lanza killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, at their home about 5 miles from the school. Lanza killed himself as police arrived at the school in response to 911 calls.
The massacre ranks as the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history after the 2007 shooting at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Virginia, which left 32 people dead.
The public defender assigned to Alba's case did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment. Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorneys Office in New Haven did not return calls seeking comment.

The best way to tell is you have depression that is interfering with your life is?have you felt this way for 2 or more weeks. If you have, you have clinical depression. I?ve had it for years but didn?t accept it. Because I?ve probably always had it, I thought these feelings of uselessness and/or worthlessness were normal.
Please be honest with yourself when you take the depression test. Take the test at depressedtest. com site. No one except you will know that you took the test. And no one but you will know your score.
To read about the types of depression?I?ve chosen a few that are easy to read. In the beginning, if you have depression, all the types will seem to fit. But there will be one category that has more of your symptoms than the others.
9 Types of Depressive Disorder: This page explains them.
? Major depression
? Dysthymia
? Manic-Depression
? Cyclothymia
? Post-partum depression
? Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
? Existential depression
? Mood disorders due to a medical condition
? Medication-induced depression
? Substance-induced mood disorder
Depression types adds some, such as PTSD
From Healthy Place, types of depression. There is also a depression community at this site.
Depression Help For You has an easy to use drop down menu of the depression types.
What to do if you believe you need help?
The above information is only for you to decide if you need to see a professional. If you have health insurance, going to a psychiatrist is the best place to start. Only psychiatrist and/or medical doctors can prescribe medication. Psychologists can talk to you but they can?t prescribe medication. I always believe in starting with medication. Talking about your life and/or your problems will be much more effective once you have the mood swings in check.
Be prepared to be patient. The medication may take 3-4 weeks to begin helping you. Plus it may not be the right medication. No one can look at you or talk to you and automatically determine what you need. You have to try out the medications and they each take time to be effective in your body.
From? Depression Help for You: ?How does medication for depression help??:
To answer this question, you need to know something about what happens in your brain and nervous system when you become depressed.
Your brain and nervous system are made up of millions of cells. Each of these cells is separate from all of the other cells?that is, they are not connected. Messages are passed from one cell to the next by chemical messengers called neurotransmitters.
These neurotransmitters are released from one cell, travel through a space called a synapse to another cell. When enough neurotransmitters have landed on the second cell, it responds and the message has been transmitted.
When a person becomes depressed, the cells which are receiving the neurotransmitters are not operating properly. These post-synaptic cells have slowed down their rate of responding. This keeps the messages from being passed from one cell to the next through the brain and nervous system. The neurotransmitters are unable to do their job.
The reduction in messages being passed along is one of the processes involved in depression.
Some of the neurotransmitters which are involved in a person becoming depressed are serotonin, norepinephrine, epinephrine, and dopamine.
Another substance that seems to be involved in depression is an enzyme called monoamine oxidase. Monoamine oxidase is found in many cells. It is involved in the oxidation of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and serotonin. Oxidation is a process through which cells lose oxygen. In part, it is through oxidation that neurotransmitters are broken down.
All of the medications for depression affect one or more neurotransmitters to help them do a better job passing messages through the brain and nervous system.
Some medications for depression, called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), keep serotonin from being reabsorbed once it has been released into the synapse. SSRIs include Celexa, Lexa-Pro, Prozac, Luvox, Paxil, and Zoloft.
Others, called serotonin-2 antagonist/reuptake inhibitors (SARIs), oppose or block serotonin at the receptor site. Serzone and Desyrel are SARIs.
Effexor is a medication for depression which works by blocking both serotonin and norepinephrine from being reabsorbed from the synapse. It is called a serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI).
A couple of medications for depression are called atypicals. It is uncertain how the first atypical medication for depression, Wellbutrin, works. It may effect dopamine or norepinephrine. Remeron is another atypical medication for depression. Remeron works by blocking or opposing serotonin reception and by enhancing both serotonin and norepinephrine.
Marplan, Nardil, and Parnate are monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). They inhibit monoamine oxidase slowing down the loss of oxygen from epinephrine, norepinephrine and serotonin. Thus, these neurotransmitters stay active longer.
Tricyclic antidepressants, like the MAOIs, have been around for many years. They include Elavil, Asendin, Anafranil, Norpramin, Sinequan, Tofranil, Pamelor, Aventyl, Ludiomil, Vivactil, and Surmontil. Each of these medications for depression work by inhibiting the reabsorption of one or more of the neurotransmitters.
The final group of medications for depression are called mood stabilizers. They are most often used to treat bipolar disorder or manic depressive illness. Nevertheless, they are also used with unipolar
depressions? clinical depressive disorders which don?t involve extreme highs or manic episodes.
Mood stabilizers include Tegretol, Lamictal, Eskalith, Lithobid, and Depakote. These medications work by changing how easy it is for a cell to receive a message transmitted by the neurotransmitter.

LONDON (AP) ? A medical watchdog ruled Sunday that a former British army doctor failed to protect detainees and acted dishonestly following the death of an Iraqi civilian beaten and killed in the custody of U.K. troops in 2003.
Baha Mousa died while in custody at a British base after being detained in a raid in Basra, Iraq, in September 2003. He had sustained 93 injuries, including fractured ribs and a broken nose. Britain's defense authorities later apologized for the mistreatment of Mousa and nine other Iraqis and paid a 3 million pound ($4.9 million) settlement. Six soldiers were cleared of wrongdoing at a court martial, while another pleaded guilty and served a year in jail.
Derek Keilloh, the senior medic on duty who treated Mousa, had denied knowledge of Mousa's injuries, claiming that he had only spotted dried blood around Mousa's nose after he was arrested and beaten.
But Britain's Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service ruled Sunday that Keilloh knew of the injuries and failed to adequately examine Mousa's body. It said he then failed to assess other detainees or protect them from further mistreatment and inform senior officers of what was going on. The tribunal will now decide if Keilloh's behavior amounts to misconduct and if so, what penalty he will face. The watchdog has the power to suspend or strip doctors of their medical licenses.
The tribunal also ruled that Keilloh engaged in "misleading and dishonest conduct" by maintaining under oath that he had seen no injuries to Mousa's body.
While the injuries to Mousa and others were the responsibility of British soldiers, there were "clearly failings by others with responsibility toward the detainees to have safeguarded their welfare," it said.

Researchers have linked ancient milk residue (thousands of years-old) to early forms of cheese-making. The scientists say this research provides new insights into the human diet and food production technologies.?

Milk production and dairy processing allowed early farmers to produce food without slaughtering precious livestock, and making cheese?turned milk into a less perishable food that was more digestible for a population who at the time would have been intolerant to the lactose contained in milk.
Researchers from the?University of Bristol in Britain, with colleagues in the?United States?and?Poland, analyzed fatty acids embedded in prehistoric pottery from the Polish region of Kuyavia, and found they had been used to separate milk into fat-rich curds for?cheese and lactose-containing whey.
"The presence of milk residues in sieves ... constitutes the earliest direct evidence for?cheese-making," said M?lanie Salque from?Bristol, one of the authors of the research, which was published in?the journal Nature.
Peter Bogucki, another researcher involved in the work, said: "Making cheese?allowed them to reduce the lactose content of milk, and we know that, at that time, most of the humans were not tolerant to lactose."
Milk residues have been found at ancient sites up to 8,000 years old in?Turkey?and?Libya, but there was no evidence that the milk had been processed into cheese.
Until now, the earliest evidence of?cheese-making came from depictions of milk processing in murals several thousand years younger than the pottery fragments.
The researchers believe other vessels found in the same region were used for other specific purposes. Jars lined with beeswax were probably for storing water, and pottery containing the remnants of carcass fats was probably used for cooking meat.
"It is truly remarkable, the depth of insights into ancient human diet and?food processing technologies?these ancient fats preserved in archaeological ceramics are now providing us with," said?Richard Evershed, who heads the?Bristol?team.

MOSCOW - Russia's Foreign Ministry has denied that a top diplomat said Syrian President Bashar Assad is losing control of his country.
It said in a statement on Friday that Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov "has not made any statements or special interviews recently" on Syria but was simply citing the stance of the Syrian opposition while giving a speech on Thursday.
Russian state-owned news agencies had quoted Bogdanov as saying that rebels might win the civil war, a comment that appeared to dramatically shift Russia's stance on Syria. The U.S. later on Thursday commended Russia for "waking up to the reality" by acknowledging the regime's impending fall.
Analysts viewed the diplomat's statement as Russia's attempt to begin positioning itself for Assad's eventual defeat.

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) ? A judge on Friday ordered the richest man in Serbia to be held in prison for 30 days pending trial on suspicion of corruption, as the government hailed his arrest as proof that no one is above the law in the graft-plagued country.
The arrest of influential billionaire retail tycoon Miroslav Miskovic is part of an anti-corruption sweep that the new nationalist government says is necessary if the country wants to move closer to European Union membership. But critics argue the crackdown is mostly aimed at political opponents and allies of the country's previous pro-Western leadership.
Miskovic, 67, was arrested on Wednesday along with his son Marko and eight others in connection with the privatization of several Serbian road construction companies in 2005, during which the suspects allegedly gained illegal profits of about ?30 million ($39 million).
The judge at Serbia's special court for organized crime ruled that Miskovic, his son and five others must remain in prison during the pre-trial investigation. The rest were freed, with their travel documents seized.
"We are now starting with the investigations," said public prosecutor for organized crime Miljko Radisavljevic. "We will try to collect as much evidence as possible."
Miskovic is the owner of Delta Holding, the largest private company in Serbia, which deals with retail, real estate, insurance and agriculture business throughout the Balkans. Though he is not openly a government opponent he has financed several pro-Western parties that are now in opposition.
He started his business empire under late strongman Slobodan Milosevic in the 1990s, when he also briefly served as deputy prime minister. But after Milosevic fell from power in 2000, Miskovic supported the new, pro-Western authorities and expanded his wealth, estimated in 2007 at some $2 billion (?1.54 billion) and believed to have grown since then.
