In the month of October, members of the Van Buren Firefighters Association conducted several fundraising events in order to help raise money for the awareness and prevention of breast cancer.
After several ?boot? drives at local intersections and a popular car wash, the association collected $8,500 for the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Cancer Center in Ann Arbor.
A check was presented to Matthew Holland, representing the cancer center, on Dec. 14 at a small ceremony at Fire Station 2.
Firefighters Bruce VanGemert Jr., Lacey Marcotte and Michael Shores spearheaded the fundraising campaign by organizing the boot drives and the car wash. The success of the car wash was aided by the Belleville Road Walmart, which provided the soap, brushes, and other cleaning supplies.
?So many families we meet in the community use St. Joe?s ER or the primary care facilities. We rely on St. Joe?s too. So we wanted to support a cancer program that helps the same people we help as firefighters,? said VanGemert, who lost his grandmother to complications associated with breast cancer
He added that he was overwhelmed by the support firefighters received from the community and ?when we told drivers we were raising money for breast cancer (awareness) a lot of them threw in another dollar. Sometimes within two hours we had raised a thousand dollars and I think it?s pretty amazing that the community was able to do that.?
?Unfortunately our firefighters know all too well the effects breast cancer has had on their own families. Some family members have been lost to it, some have survived it, and our hope is that many more can avoid it by supporting research, awareness, and other services? said Fire Chief Dan Besson, whose mom, Yvette, fought breast cancer twice before passing away in 1994.
?As a fire chief I am just so proud of my firefighters ? they took time away from their families to help others ? with the hope that they can save other families the grief they?ve experienced from a breast cancer diagnosis,? Besson added. ?Also the community needs a special thank you for digging deep in their pockets so the firefighters could reach and exceed their goal.?
